VERULAM WINS EASILY TWO RACES FOR EUPATRID SUCCESS AT SECOND START [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] NEW PLYMOUTH, Thursday Car Leaf won the Trial Hunters' Steeplechase decisively. Ho was always handy and, running past Promenade at tho homo turn, he soon had the race in safe keeping. Promenade gave a fine exhibition of jumping and led most of the way. Over tho second round he was outstayed, but he beat the rest easily. Conflagration was in third place over the last six furlongs, without looking likely to trouble the first two. The last-named was slowly away and Don Quex and Chary led to the three furlongs in 445. The pace was on at the five, airl they ran the next three in 3S 2-os. . The order was unchanged into the straight and with Chary just showing out in front of Dor. Master Cyklon ran once Tound on the plough track in 1.41 2-5, coming home the last three furlongs full of running in 40s. Kathbeila made light of a. three-furlong task, run in 3Ss, while Yogi, after two -rounds of pace work, sprinted half a nillc in 535, impressing as likely to strike top form early this season. GROWING POPULARITY TROTTING IN THE WAIKATO [from OUR OWN correspondent] HAMILTON, Thursday "With the growing popularity of trotting in the district, it is felt that tho club can look forward to the future with confidenco," said Mr. H. Windsor, chairman of the Waikato Trotting Club, at tho annual meeting on Tuesday evening. Primarily as the result of the rebate of one per cent on totalisator tax being discontinued, the profit on the year's working was not ns high as in the previous year. Tributes of respect to the memory of the late Messrs. R. T. Reid and E. J. Swann wero paid by members. It was decided to postpone additions to the members' stnnd owing to tho high cost of building. The following were elected unopposed to the committee: Messrs. A. W. Ebbctt, P. G. Harkness, J. R. Henderson, A. S. Sutherland, H. Windsor and E. R. Vernall.
