PROSPECTIVE OFFICESS DEPARTURE FOR TRENTHAM NORTHERN DISTRICT LIST After careful examination of men who had already started training with Expeditionary Force units, 76 non-com-missioned officers and men have been selected as members of the oth Officer Cadets Training Unit, and left yesterday afternoon for the Army' School of instruction, Trentham, to begin the exacting course which is pait of the examination for commissions. The list of these prospective -officers has been released by Army District Headquarters. Included in the list of men, all of whom possess high qualifications, are two who have represented New Zealand in sport. One is Gunner H. G. Vivian, well-known cricketer, and the other is Sergeant It. G. Bush, former. All Black. The following officers also left for a cours>o at Trentham:—Divisional Cavalry: Lieutenant A. THIRD ECHELON OFFICERS TEMPORARY PROMOTIONS [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION"] WELLINGTON, Thursday The Gazette to-night contains a number of appointments to and promotions in the sthird echelon of the Expeditionary Force, * with effect in most cases from August 1. TERRITORIALS' EXPENSES ASSURANCE BY MINISTER PAYMENT BEING EXPEDITED [BY TELEGRAPH SPECIAL REPORTER] WELLINGTON, Thursday "I have given instructions to expedite the payment of the amounts due," said the Minister of Defence, the Hon. F. Jones, in replying in the House of Representatives to-day to an urgent question by Mr. H. S. S. Kyle (Opposition —Ricearton). Mr. Kyle asked why territorials had still not received payment of any expenses, although they had been in training since July 1. "Some territorials have had out-of-pocket expenses amounting to almost £3 over the nine weeks, and now are to go to camp for a final month's training." Mr. Kylq said. "The Minister stated on July 30 in reply to a question that the matter of payment was receiving consideration." Mr. Jones said that schedules of the amounts due to territorials for travelling expenses had been received by the district headquarters of the territorial units concerned, and these were at present being checked preparatory to payment being made. SOCIAL SECURITY CHARGE STATEMENT BY MINISTER [BY TELEGRAPH —SPECIAL REPORTER] WELLINGTON, Thursday' "The social security charge of o per cent on military pay received by territorials called up for special training and that received by the Home Defence and Expeditionary Forces is being paid by the Government," said the Minister of Defence, the Hon.
