JAPANESE TRADE SMALLER IMPORTS OF WOOL

Imports of wool into Japan proper have fallen since the beginning of the war, the value for tTio first four months of 1940, in spito of higher prices, having been 9 per cent lower than in the same period of last year, according to Japanese statistics. This is 110 doubt due mainly to Great Britain's demands upon wool supplies, but in part it may have been due to the weaker position of Japan in foreign trade. The war in China, now in-its fourth year, is milking a deep impression upon Japanese industry. The growth of metal and machine industries has been pronounced, but it has been achieved largely at the expense of industries catering lor export. There has been, a 20 per cent increase in machinery industries from 19U1 to 1935, but the number of textile factories has declined. To keep tip supplies of imported materials there has been a drive for trade with countries outside the yen block, particularly Mexico and South America, which is helping the foreign exchange position. A FAVOURABLE JULY FINE WAIKATO PROSPECTS [fhom our own corrkspondknt] HAMILTON, Friday According to many old settlors of the Waikato. this month has been the most favourable .July they have ever experienced from a farming point of view. The rainfall has been light, totalling only 1.91 in. to date, as against the average of 4.8.'1 in., and there has been an almost entire absence of boisterous ■weather. There have been some severe frosts, over 17 degrees being registered 011 one day, but these have been beneficial. For the most part, however, the temperatures have been mild. The farms have never looked better for this time of the year. There has been ample feed available, both in the form of green pasture and in hav and ensilage. The stock have never been in better condition.
