REDUCING THE FUEL BILLS your supply of coal and while it is still in the cellar sprinkle it with a solution of washing soda, using lib. of soda to a large pail of water. This makes the coal burn less quickly.
Save your slack, and either have one box of coal and one of slack for use alternately, or else damp the slack and place it in paper bags. One of these may be placed on a clear fire and will burn for hours if not poked. An alternative method is to damp a double sheet of newspaper and to place a shovelful of slack on this, after which it may be lifted by its corners and placed on the fire. If the grate is a large one reduce its size—by using one or more of the bricks sold for that purpose. An ordinary brick placed in the middle of the grate, near the back, makes less coal necessary.
