STOCK PRICES

FIRM WAIKATO VALUES BUOYANT TONE PREVAILS DEMAND FOR STORE CATTLE Moderate ynrdings of most clnsses of stock nrc coming forward and the markets remain buoyant. The demand for store cattle continues keen and prices for these tend to show a further firming. At the present time there appears to be a shortage of well-bred' cattle and this will undoubtedly have the effect of keeping prices at high level. The good schedule which was offering for freezing and boner cattle, together with the favourable season, resulted in many cattle being sent to the works which in a normal season might have been held over and marketed this •spring.

As in the store cattle market, the inquiry for store sheep also continues strong. Breeding ewes are keenly sought and at the central yards on Tuesday a line of well-grown two-tooths in lamb to Southdown rams realised -18s. Both owe and wether white-face hoggets are also wanted, hut only small numbers of this class are coming 011 to the market at the present time, and here again there does not appear to be any great number in sight. The improved tone which lias been apparent in the dairy section for the past three weeks has also been maintained.' Only limited numbers of good quality heifers are now coming on to the market, and this, together with tlie good season, is no doubt mainly responsible for the high values ruling. The clearing sale season has now practically finished in this district, but a very strong inquiry has been evident at the few sales held recently. Very firm values rule for smaller entries of boner cows and potter bulls.

Beef.—Values f or fat cattle havo shown littlo alteration from tho slightly improved rates ruling last week. Smaller entries have been for vard at sonic of tho country sales, and, whero butchers have been short of supplies, values have sometimes been firmer. A fairly largo entry of ox beef at the central yards on Tuesday included some extra prime bullocks, which sold up to £ls 6s, this being the highest prico paid in these yards for some considerable time, but on the wholo the prico per JOOlb remained unchanged. Quite a number of consignments of prime well-bred cattle wero also Included in the female section. Competition for all classes was steady throughout and previous snle rates were maintained. Extra prime bullocks, A'l<l to £ls ss; prime medium-weights, £l'J IDs'to £i:t 10s; prime light-weights, £ll to £l2; small and unfinished, to £lO ss; extra prime young cows and heifers, £lO 10s to £ll Os; prime heavy, £0 to £10; medium-weights, £7 10s to £S 15s; lighter, £0 to £7.

Mutton.—Values for fat sliccp havo also shown littlo alteration during the current week. Small crtries aro coining forward at country sales and competition from local butchers at these centres maintains values at central yard rates. Another full yarding was penned nt tho Frankton auction on Tuesday and again included a number of pens of very prime wethers, which met with keen competition at slightly firmer rates, while other grades sold on a par with previous rates. Prime ewes were penned in less than average numbers, with the result that values for this class were sometimes a shade firmer. An average periling of fat lambs sold at unchanged rates. Heavy prime wethers made :i.Js (id to 00s; prime, 30s to 3'Js (id; light. 'JSs to UDs (id; small and unfinished, 25s to 27s Oa; oxtra prime ewes, 20s to 27s .'ld; prime, 21s to 25s (Id; medium, 22s to 2,' is Od; light, IDs to 21s; killable, to ISs. Pigs.—Very small offerings of fat pigs aro now coming forward at all sales in this district, and in many cases are barely sufficient for local butchers' requirements, with the result tint prices for well-finished porkers aro very high. Unfinished sorts are also keenly sought for finishing purposes at very firm rates. Breeding sows are still coming on to the market in fairly large numbers, and, while those showing well forward meet a ready sale, small and backward sorts arc not as keenly sought. While stores and weaners are still in demand, values have been just a shade easier at some centres this week. Baconers sell from £3 12s to £1 13s; heavy porkers, £3 3s to £3 10s; medium. £2 15s to £3; light, £2 Ss to £2 l is; unfinished, to £2 Os.
