OBITUARY

MR. H. C. SWANN

LONG RESIDENCE IN FIJI The death has occurred at his son's residence at Stanley liny of Mr. Herbert Charles Swann, aged 72. He was born in Kaiapoi and. when only six weeks old, he left with his parents in the ship Western Star for Fiji, where he remained until two years ago. During his 70 years' residence in Fiji, Sir. Swann was engaged in copra planting and inter-island trading, and for many years he was associated with Burns, Philp and Company, Limited, Levuka. Mr. Swann was also well known through the family connection with a retail chemist business in Samoa, Levuka and Suva, the first shop being opened by his father, the late Mr. James Butler Swann, at Levuka about 1870. and continued sinco by various members of the family. *Mr. Swann is survived by his wifa and nine children. There are 23 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. MRS. 0. HIOKS The death occurred yesterday at her residence, Trafalgar Street, Onehunga, of Mrs. Catherine Hicks, aged 93. Born in Tvrono County, Ireland, in 1847, she came to New Zealand with her parents in 1851. Her father was in an English regiment and fought in the Maori wars. Her husband, Sir. James Hicks, came from England to New Zealand and lived at Thames, where he worked in the mines and afterward took up farming. They were married there in 1866. After her husband's death 55 years ago Mrs. Hicks came to Onehunga, where she had lived in the same house ever since. She leaves one son and four daughters. There are nine grandchildren and two great-grand-children. MRS. M. A. MENZIES The death of Sirs. Mary Ann Menzies, aged 80, widow of the late Sir. David Slenzies, of Slorningside, has occurred at Hamilton. Sirs. Slenzies was an old colonist, born in Dromore, Countv Down, and arrived in New Zealand from Belfast in 1876 in the sailing ship Dover Castle. She lived the remainder of her life in Auckland* and was an ardent worker for many years in the ladies' guild of St. Luke's Anglican Church. Sirs. Slenzies is survived by two sons, a daughter and three grandchildren. MR. J. H. SANDOS [from our own correspondent] HAMILTON, Thursday The death has occurred of Sir. John Henry Sandos, of Tuhikaramea Road, Frankton, at the age of 76 years. Sir. Sandos was born in Finland, coming to New Zealand at the age of 21. He was farming in Kaikoura, Slarlborough, until he came to the Waikato in 1913. After 10 years at Whatawhata, Sir. Sandos came to Hamilton, where he had resided ever since. He is survived by four children. MR. J. H. BARR [from our own correspondent] H.UNTLY, Thursday The death has occurred at the Waikato Hospital, Hamilton, of Sir. James Henderson Barr, aged 61. Born at Glen Buck, Ayrshire, Scotland, Sir. Barr had been connected with mining all his life. With his wife and family he came to New Zealand in 1923 and went to Pukemiro, where he remained for 13 years. For the last four years he had resided at Glen Afton. He was a prominent member of tho Slasonic fraternity. He is survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters. INSPEOTOR O. E. ROAOH [by telegraph—own correspondent] DUNEDIN, Thursday 1W death has occurred of Inspector C. E. Roach, who for tho past two vears had been inspector of police at Dunedin. Inspector Roach ioinod tho force at Dunedin in 1906. In 1919 he was transferred to Ross with the rank of sergeant. After serving as sectional sergeant successively at Auckland and Christchurch, promotion to seiiiorsergbant came in 1927. In .1934 he was promoted to subinsptctor and transferred to Wellington. Three years later he came to Donedin as inspector.
