SUDDEN FALL OF COAL
MINER GRAVELY HURT ACCIDENT IN RENOWN PIT [FROM OCR OWN correspondent] HAMILTON*. Wednesday Critical injuries were suffered by a miner when lie was buried by a fall of coal in the Renown Colliery at Huntly this morning.
The victim was Mr. Thomas McEwen, aged 27. single, who suffered concussion, internal injuries and injuries to the neck. His condition late to-night was critical.
Mr. 'McEwen was employed with his stepfather, Mr. W. Donaldson, on a pillar of coal in the mine, when the coal overhead collapsed and Mr. McEwen was completely buried. Mr. Donaldson called for help and in a minute or two 30 men were working frantically in relays to free Mr. McEwen. It was not long before he was extricated, and it was at once seen that he was seriously .hurt. A doctor was waiting at the mine mouth, and an ambulance was immediately available when first-aid had been given. He was admitted to the Waikato Hospital within an hour and a-half of the accident.
