IMPORT LICENCES

ISSUE EXPEDITED THE FOURTH PERIOD NEARLY ALL DEALT WITH The issue of licences for the fourth importing period has been speeded up, compared with previous periods. Almost all applications for the importation of goods where allocations are specified have now been dealt with, according to importers. Further, a large number of special licences where the allocation has been determined by departments other than the Customs Department have now been received by Auckland merchants. Many of these are for foodstuffs, but they also cover a wide range of other goods. In many instances where importers still await the issue of special licences, it is believed the reason for the delay is that a general policy is being determined based on ascertained requirements. -

For the third period, the issue of ordinary licences in respect of applications lodged in October was not conpleted until just before Christmas. The third term extends to. June 30, yet as stated, almost all fourth term ordinary licences are now issued. The issue by the Reserve Bank of permits for remittances for payment of goods now appears to be entirely dependent on the receipt of an import licence. The general experience is that permits are received within about 10 days of application.
