CAITY TAKES HURDLES IVY WILLONYX AT LONG ODDS LLANDAFF. SUCCESSFUL AGAIN BY ARCHER The win favourite Cappy registered a smooth performance in winning the Avondale Hurdles, for which Aintree, who ran a promising second at Ellerslio Inst Monday, was better supported for a place. Cappy assumed the lead after jumping the second fence and was never afterward headed. The only one to givo him any serious trouble was High Delight, who shaped really well for a beginner. After.moving up handy at the turn, High Delight made a determined effort at the last fence, but was out-jumped by the more seasoned Cappv. High Delight goes well in soft going ami should he a good prospect for the winter meetings. Racewhip, always handy, made a creditable showing for third. He was the outsider of tho field and paid over a score for a place. Jewelled Girdle gave indications that ho is likely Jo make an early return to form by running a good fourth. Midland and Chikara also shaped rcspoctably and Aint-reo made up a lot of ground to finish seventh after being a long way in the rear early. Clinch Finishes Strongly Coming with a «plondid run from a long way back, the second fancy Clinch defeated the each-way favourito Esquire in the last couple of strides or the Rosebank Handicap. Clinch has not done a great- deal of racing and ho has made much improvement lately, his finishing effort on this occasion indicating that he is likely t-o be seen to advantage over longer distances when more matured. Probably he was a shade lucky to win, as •0. Evans appeared to be over-confident on Esquire in the last furlong. Esquire is also an improver and his turn should come. C'heval de Bataillc displayed plenty of speed out in front and battled on gamely for third, after being headed below the distance. Constant Star shaped well for fourth and others to perform creditably were Commemoration, Whcnua, Loch Aero, • Kingcraft and Venture. On tho strength of his win at Ellerslio last Monday the three-year-old Llandaff was mado a short-priced favourite for the Chevalier Handicap and he justified tho confidence by winning with the greatest ease. Jumping out smartly from No. 1, Llandaff was always travelling well in front and he came right away without being urged in tho last- furlong. Llandaff has had only three races and is very useful. Selwyn stayed on well at the finish for second and Bronze Emerald, who was always near tho front, held on solidly for third. Merry Vaals was running on in fourth position and Valerian was fifth'after going very fast from No. 21. to run up on tho outside of the leaders at the turn. Fairfield lost his rider soon after tho start and Hunter's Night, who appeared to be checked early, was never prominent, finishing in the rear with Tano Maluitu. Odtaa lost a forward position after going about three furlongs, and Tellsom, who drow No. 20, failed to show up at all. Third Successive Win

The consistent- Gold Vaals scored his third successive win when lie scored in the Foley Memorial Handicap, in which tho each-way favourite Yogi fell as tho field raced to tho homo turn. Yogi was in the rear at tho time, yet he was close enough to have had prospects. His fall was attributed to tho fact that he trot on the heels of Gold Vaals, who was just in front of him. Tho raco was slowly run in the early stages, when Gold Vaals and Royal Appellant wero well back, and they became prominent only in the last furlonfr. Gold Vaals was very wide out at the finish and he just beat Royal Appellant by the narrowest of margins. Proud Fox looked likely when ho came through on the rails to reach the lead with Te Kawiti after passing tho distance. However, ho was unable to hold off Gold Vaals and Royal Appellant. Te Kawiti, who went very well, weakened in tho last half-furlong. Kelly and Bronwen failed to run on after being prominent to the turn, the latter finishing in tho r<jar. Mintlaw flattered tho hopes of his admirers when ho ran up at the turn, but ho failed to go on. Pocket was well placed until reaching tho straight, but tho last furlong found her wanting. Assisted by a brilliant beginning from No. >l/,-pqsiti6n, the each-way favourito Belle registered a decisive victory in tho Oakley Handicap. Tho only ono to givo her any serious opposition was the second fancy Mysito, who went with her in the middle stages, but could not hold liisi own in tho last furlong. Gay Kosette finished strongly for third, paying a nice price for a place. She deepened the good impression she created by running third at Paeroa and is a solid type of filly, likely to do better. The place-getters beat the others by some lengths and the wellsupported Chain Acre was never prominent. Water Hound shaped creditably for . fourth in his first race, but he has a doubtful-looking joint, and might not stand much racing. Queen City made a fair showing without being dangerous in the straight. Pirate King Surprises Finishing in great style, Pirate King brought off a big surprise in the Railway Handicap, in which tho each-way favourite Blonde Princess missed a place, failing to finish with real dash after being handily placed for five furlongs. Pirate King was never prominent until well into the straight and. after bring *a long way back, was going away at the finish. Orelio was responsible for a good effort in running second, as Lornacre and Bronze Moth kept him right at it out in front in the early stages. Tho pace beat Lornacre and Bronze Moth, who tired badly at the end, and Orelio did well to hold on as long as he did, surrendering tho lead only rear the end after appearing the likely winner at the distance. Kathbella came from last for third after a slow beginning and it was a fine effort under 0.10. Palustro and Trilliarch ran creditable races. It was with a splendid finishing run on the outside that the each-way favourite Serenata got up in the last few strides to win the Whan Handicap from tho moderatelyfancied Silver Stick. Serenata appeared to strike some trouble in the early stages and the field was well into- the straight before she became prominent. It was a nice performance, and she stayed too well for Silver Stick, who looked like winning when ho took the measure of Hunto at tho distance. Silver Stick went fast early to secure a position from No. 11, and just failed to see it right out. Hunto appeared to be going easily in front at tho turn, but the last furlong of a mile again found him wanting, and he was cut out of third by First Gold Money, who was at double figures. However, the rider of First Gold Money failed to weigh in and Hunto was awarded the placing. Tea Gong made a creditable showing under his big weight and Royal Message also shaped respectably. A Meritorious Victory Making a great effort in the straight, Ivy Willonyx scored a meritorious victory at long odds in the Titirangi Handicap. Drawing tho outside at the barrier she was in the rear in the early running, and it was not until well into the straight that she appeared on the scene. Ivy Willonyx, who galloped well with Royal Appellant on Thursday, is evidently partial to the long straight at Avondae, as she has scored at her last three starts on the course, having won a double there in November. Clipper came homo well for second, and there is no doubt (lint he is much improved. Greek Queen also finished attractively, as she was also well back until the straight was reached. Land Girl was closer in fourth position at the finish than at any other stage. Foxmond, who was a good fifth, made a determined bid on tho outside at the distance and then weakened. Full Hand and Silver Quex tired in the last furlong, after being at the head of the field until passing the distance.
