AUCKLAND WEST SEAT

Sir, —May I be permitted to make a suggestion. The question of a Parliamentary successor to the late Mr. Savage has already been raised. Having regard to all the circumstances, would it not be a fine thing if a by-election could be avoided? There will be many people in the City West electorate who • would gladly seek an opportunity of paying a further tribute to the memory of one who lias represented them for so long; and, among those who would feel in this way, there are certain to be many who do not belong to the party led by Mr. Savage. Under these circumstances, it would lie a fitting compliment to his achievements if anything suggesting party strife could be avoided in his old electorate at the present time The Labour Party might be urged to produce the man, who, in its opinion, would be best qualified to carry in the House a worthy reminder of its lamented leader; and all other parties might be invited to accept the position and let it go at that. After all, the pressing need of this country at the moment is for men of outstanding quality, and that factor should, for the time being, outweigh purely party considerations. Of course, the whole question is one for the people of Ponsonby to decide, and it is with respect for that limitation that this present suggestion is put forward. 11. M. ALGIE.
