TAKING OF SAND

MANUKAU FORESHORE PROHIBITION REQUESTED FRANKLIN COUNTY ATTITUDE [FHOM OUR OWN CORTtKSJ'ONOKNT] PTJKEKOBE, Monday A resolution expressing the view that tho Auckland Harbour Board had failed in its duty to the public through not prohibiting the taking of sand from the foreshore of the Manukau Harbour was passed by the Franklin County Council yesterday. The council claimed that Manukau beaches on the shores of the county, which have become very popular seaside resorts, bad been largely denuded and might soon be completely spoiled through commercial users "being permitted to take sand from the foreshore. The resolution passed asked the board to completely prohibit the removal of sand. It stated that nothing less than complete prohibition would satisfy the council, which viewed the position so seriously that, unless the board took definite action, it would proceed with the necessary steps to promote special legislation on the subject. The resolution added that the board did not permit the removal of sand from beaches near Onehunga or at Takapuim or Devonport, and the public of Franklin County must insist on the same rule.
