OBITUARY
SIR JOHN GILMOUR MINISTER OF SHIPPING . ' (Received March 31, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, March 30 The sudden death occurred to-day of Sir John Gilmour, Minister of Shipping. ' i Sir John Gilmour, who was appointed Minister of Shipping in October, 1939, was born in Scotland in May, 1876, the son of the first baronet. He was educated at Trinity College. Glenalmond, Edinburgh University and Trinity Hall, Cambridge. Volunteering on the outbreak of the South African war in
\ SiR JOHN GILMOUR 1899, ho served with the Imperial Yeomanry. Joining the army again at the beginning of the last war, he served throughout it and reached the rank of lieutenant-colonel. Ho succeeded to the baronetcy on the death of, his father in 1920 and a year later was made a Junior Lord of the Treasury. For fivo years from 1924 Sir John was Secretary for Scotland. On the formation of the" National Government in August, 1931, he was made Minister of Agriculture, and he < was Homo Secretary. 1932-35. He was Conservative member of the House of Commons for Pollok, Glasgow. The heir to the baronetcy is Mr. John Edward Gilmour, who was born on October 24, 1912.
