GALLANT RESCUE

TWO TRAPPED IN* CAB ; humane society award INCIDENT AT WAERENGA Tn recognition of promptness nncl gallantry in the rescue of u man and 11is young son who were trapped in a motor-car which had overturned into deep water in the Waerenga Stream in August, IMS, n certificate of commendation has been awarded by the Royal Humane Society to Mr. Cedric B. Carley, of Waerenga. Alter swerving to. avoid a stationary Car the yehicle'turned a. somersault and fell into the stream which runs alongside the To Kauwhata-Waerenga Road. The driver, Air. Walter O'Hrien, of To Kauwhata, and his seven-year-old son were trapped in the car, the body of which was completely submerged, ('idled bv his wife, who had seen the accident, Mr. Carley plunged fully dressed into the stream and, with great difficulty, extricated the two occupants. Both Mr. O'Hrien and his son were unconscious, and it was at first thought the boy was dead. However, artificial respiration was applied by Mrs. Carley, and both were revived.

The certificate was presented to Mr. Carley at a gathering at To Kauwhata by the chairman of the Waikato County Council, Mr. .T. A. Sampson. He referred to Mr. Carley\s pluck and resourcefulness ill carrying out a difficult task, and also emphasised the part taken by Mrs. Carley in. reviving the victims.
