DIVERTED SHIPS
CARGO OWNERS' POSITION The position of owners of cargo who suffer loss through ships being diverted or requisitioned is discussed by Mr. J?. Headland, Accountant-General of the Ministry of Shipping, London, in a letter to the London Chamber of Commerce. Details of the Ministry's explanation have been received by the Auckland Chamber of Commerce. It is stated that the Ministry is fully conscious of the loss and inconvenience which has been suffered by owners of cargo shipped on board vessels which, owing to the present emergency, have either been diverted for their own safety or requisitioned for further service. Any claims of this nature which can be brought within the terms of the Compensation (Defence) Act will always receive, as they liavu in the past, the careful consideration of the department. It is, however, to be observed, the letter continues, that the Act makes no provision for compensation out of public funds for loss or damage which is merely consequential upon the exercise of executive powers.
