"PETER THE ROACH"
NOVEL MASCOT FOR TROOPS A sergeant-major of a regiment stationed somewhere in Dorset went fishing in a local stream and caught a roach? weighing l*lb. Ho put it in a bath used by the troops and found it was still alive next day. Kvery time a man wanted a hath the fish was put in a bowl of water and returned to the bath afterwards. Then the commanding officer became interested in the roach, hy now named Peter. He detailed a private to dig worms for it. The regiment then received orders to go to another part of Southern England. A tin tank was prepared for Peter so that he could travel with the troops.
