INCREASES IN AUCKLAND THE TREND MAINTAINED Continued increases in the number of births and marriage notices for the month, and a decrease in the number of deaths, are shown in the returns for March. Marriages by the registrar also have shown an increase. The total number of births for the month was 283, compared with 239 last March. Marriage notices increased from 307 to 372. while deaths fell from 203 to 173.

Statistics for the quarter continue the tendency shown in the previous two months, corresponding increases and decreases being shown, in every section. Births increased from 723 to 902, and marriage notices from 757 to 1005. The number of deaths for the period was 514. against 552 las( year. Marriages by the registrar, which are included in the marriage notices; rose from 165 to 197.

DUNEDIN REGISTRATIONS SHARP DECLINE IN BIRTHS [BY TELKGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION*] DUNEDIN, Friday A sharp decline in the number of births for both the month of March and the first quarter of 1940. as compared with the corresponding periods of last year, is shown in the vital statistics for the Dunedin district. Births this month totalled 75. as against 115 last March. The total for the first quarter of the year was 326. compared with 384 for the same period of 1939. There is little difference in the number of deaths, but marriages in both instances show a slight increase.
