RETURNED SOLDIERS
OFFICERS IN RESERVE ELECTIVE SYSTEM GRANTED [from our own correspondent] "WHANGAREI, Saturday After repeated representations, the military authorities have now agreed that the members of the Returned Soldiers' Reserve may elect their own officers and non-commissioned officers, and that the men so elected will hold the appropriate rank for the position to which they are elected. The rank so given would be in the reserve only, and this was all that the members of the reserve desired. This information was given on Saturday evening to a parade of the Whangarei company of the North Auckland Battalion by the officer commanding, Lieutenant-Colonel H. C. Hemphill, who read a letter from the staff officer, Northern Command, on the question. At the same parade, the men decided to continue with the fortnightly parades, although quarterly parades had been suggested by the authorities. The question of uniforms for the reserve has been the subject of representations to the authorities, and Lieut-enant-Colonel Hemphill stated that this matter would be taken up with MajorGeneral J. E. Duigan, Chief of the General Staff, when he was in Whangarei next Friday with the deputy-Prime Minister, Hon. P. Eraser.
