BARQUE SAILS

AN IMPRESSIVE SIGHT MAYOR AS HELMSMAN ACTIVITY OF THE CREW Bound for New Plymouth the Finnish barque Penang attracted approving eyes on Saturday morning as she set her sails and left from Auckland under a south-east breeze. Drawn from the western side of King's wharf at 7 o'clock by the Harbour Board tug William C. Daldy she provided a picturesque note as she entered the stream under a blue skv and with the sea shot with the light of the early sun. Sailors swarmed aloft loosening the sails. Once a man ran along a high yard with hands free, an action that emphasised the daring and confident activity shown by all as they engaged on their task. Once round North Head the tug, which had been alongside the barque, cast off. The Penang was then moving well, and at that stage the Mayor of Auckland, Sir Ernest Davis, was at the wheel, the compliment being extended to him by the master, Captain K. V. Karlsson, in appreciation of kindness extended to the ship's company while in Auckland. The wheel, broken in a storm south of Tasmania, had been repaired during the stay' in port. Sir Ernest left the barque in his yacht, Morewa, and returned to the harbour. By the time half the distance to Tiritiri Island had been covered all sails other than the mainsail were set, and the Penang with the favouring breeze was moving at a brisk 10 knots to ihe open waters.
