NATIONAL TOURNEY thrilling duel in mile FINE EFFORT IN POLE VAULT [BY TELKGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION'] WELLING TON, Friday There were 4000 people at the Basin Reserve to-night for the opening of the track nnd field championships of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association. The highlight was tl*e mile championship, in which there was an exciting climax. There was a spurt by the title-holder. \V. A. C. Pullar, ot Wellington. and a young challenger. Dickison, of Otago, over the last. 200 yds. .Pullar had asserted himself 70yds. from the tape. Then Dickison came at him again and forced the champion into a second finishing effort over the last 15yds., Pullar winning by a yard. I). Weichart. West Coast, North Island, in winning the pole vault bettered the previous best New Zealand performance, but failed by 3in. to break the New Zealand record set by the Australian, Winter, in I'J.'ifi.
