CARRIER TRADE
FEWEE ASSOCIATIONS WARNING BY AUTHORITY NEED TO MAKEr REDUCTION A warning to carriers' associations that it was necessary to reduce their numbers considerably, and that in the future he was not prepared to recognise as many as in the past, is contained in a statement issued yesterday by the No. 1 Transport Licensing Authority, Mr. E. J. Phelan. Unless an early attempt was made by the associations to comply with his suggestions, he said, it would be necessary for him to name on operators' licences the association with which eacii should link up.
"From my experience over the past years," Mr. Phelan continued, "I have come to the conclusion that there arc far too many carriers' organisations in existence. Considerable over-lapping is caused, and at times I have to listen to opposing views from representatives of smaller asssociations concerning a licence affecting the members of the two or three organisations concerned." The needs of the road operators, he continued, would be well served if there were no more than four or possibly five associations in the whole of the No. 1 territory, which extends to the southern boundaries of the Waitomo, Taupo and Opotiki counties. The associations could have headquarters at Whangarei, Auckland, Hamilton and Rotorua, with representatives in each of the counties which comprise the different areas. "So far as the Auckland area is concerned," Mr. Phelan concluded, "I feel that there is room for two associations, since there are ■ sufficient owner-drivers and master carriers to warrant an organisation for each class of operator. This, however, would not apply elsewhere, and there is certainly no need in this area for any other small organisations."
