PROBATION GRANTED
SUPREME COURT CASES Probation was granted by the Chief Justice, Sir Michael Myers, to two prisoners who appeared before him in the Supreme Court yesterday for sentence. Mr. G. S. It. Meredith appeared for the Crown. A charge of forgery and uttering at Taumarunui had been admitted by Charles Corkill, who was not represented by counsel. Mr. Meredith said there were other charges pending against him in the Magistrate's Court at Auckland. Further inquiries had been found necessary. The forgery had been detected before any harm had been done. Prisoner was at present serving two sentences amounting to three months for theft at Taumarunui. His Honor said the probation officer reported favourably, and he could not take into consideration matters apart from this charge. The prisoner would be admitted to probation for two years, and ordered to pay £2 costs. On a charge of having had unlawful carnal knowledge of a girl 15 years of nge, Meschek Gathercole, aged 71 (Mr. Glaister), was admitted to probation for 18 months on condition that he remained in an institution under the control of the Solvation Army during that period. His Honor said he felt justified in granting probation because of the favourable nature of the probation officer's report. i
