DEVONPORT INTERESTS

CENTENNIAL PROJECT GOVERNMENT'S APPROVAL Approval of the Devon port Borough Council's centennial project was received from the Auckland Provincial Centennial Council and the Government at a meeting of the Borough Council last night.

The council's plans provide for the conversion of the present council chambers into a library, St. John Ambulance depot, Plunket room and sports centre, it is intended that the old post office building should house the council offices and alterations to this building are in progress. Applications for street collections for the Y.M.C.A. and Salvation Army Fighting Services Appeal on March 15 and by the Auckland 'Returned Soldiers' Association in connection with "Poppy Day" on April 19 were approved. Advice approving the names of Achilles and Ajax for streets in the borough was received from the Post and Telegraph Department, with the assurance that steps would be taken to prevent duplication. Achilles Crescent was approved by the council as the name of the street part of which is now named Bank Street, between Lake Road and Old Lake Road. Ajax Street branches off Achilles Crescent.
