HISTORIC FLAGS
RIVER PLATE BATTLE DISPLAY IN TOWN HALL Two ensigns flown by H.M.S. Achilles in the battle of the River Plate were displayed ih the Town Hall yesterday for the first time, and were inspected by a number of people, including parties of schoolchildren in the charge of teachers. 1 • • One of the flags is a New Zealand ensign, used for the first time as a battle flag. It was brought back to the Dominion in the ship's strongroom and will probably be handed over to some civic authority "for preservation as an historic relic. The other is a white ensign, considerably larger. It is frayed along -the outer edge by hard wear at sea, and also hears holes and rents from German shrapnel or shellsplinters. The stage on "which the flags are displayed has been effectively decorated with greenery, and a military guard is maintained. The flags may be seen between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. until to-mor-row, and between 9 . a.m. and 10 p.m. on Friday. A photograph appears on page 8. '
