GAME OF BOWLS

POTORUA PAIPS EVENT ANOTHER ONEHUNGA SUCCESS YOUNG TEAMS PERFORM WELL The chief bowling attraction of the. past, week was the annual pairs tournament at Rotorua, the second event to bo held in ...the thermal district in a .fortnight. The outcome of the tournament. u' win for the Onehunga team. A. Robertson and H. Livingstone, was remarkable for the fact that the same two players were associated in victory in the Rotorua fours event. Previously . these two players had gained' prominence with a win in the New Zealand fours championship in Wellington. As was the case in Wellington, ■ where they just managed to qualify from the section stages, the Onehunga, cauplo just, scraped in at Rotorua with the minimum number of,wins. However, once the post-section play was reached the redoubtable Onehunga pair did not give their, opponents any quarter' and made, light of the ensuing games. The Onehunga representatives were heartily congratulated by IJie, authorities and competitors 011 the double success achieved. ,

' ' The tournament was remarkable for the number-of young combinations which tried their luck in the .event. Some of these performed moderately well, whilo a few exceeded even their own expectations and. figured among the section play survivors. In section A, W. Lenderyou and L. Waite (Auckland Club) and F, Newell and G. Overington (West End), all young players with the exception of Lenderyou,'averaged over 50 pec cent of wins and must bo complimented on their skill. The Rawhiti pair, Nolan and Colley, who are both in charge of bowling greens, proved that they know something about, the game as well as the upkeep of greens.. Colley, who skinned, gave a' remarkable exhibition up to the time .he was defeated in the postrsection stages. A young skip who showed promise was E. W. Burton, who is a protege of Maxwell Walker. It will be remembered that he filled the role of lead in Walker's team last Christmas, when the Auckland team was defeated in the final by J. Griffiths' Grey Lynn combination.'ln this tourney, although only a third-year player, Burton filled the position of skip and, ably seconded by J. Ilislop, a more "seasoned exponent, rose to great heights during the progress of section play. Congratulations must be extended to H. Scott (Grey.Lynn) on his section qualification. Among his in the section were the eventual winners, Robertson and Livingstone. Another player in this section was the popular J. Reid (St. Heliers), who also claimed, a victory over tho Onehunga pair. Reid had a good record of wins, but failed to qualify. . . L „ A very fine record of nine wins out of 10 games was established by the Taumarunui pair, J. Vu.vcich and F. Mephan. However, this was of no avail to them when it came to the more exacting post-section stages of play. , , Splendid weather, favoured the event throughout, which was in contrast to the conditions experienced during the fours tournev a fortnight earlier. However, tho green conditions were still far from good and an improvement will have to be made before next season or the popularity of the events will wane.
