ORIGIN OF HOCKEY
TRACED BACK TO PERSIANS 'An inquiry from'a-Yorkshire- reader as to the.. origin .of hockey has. resulted;-in the discovery that this great 1 game has'a •■history of.many thousands of years, 6tatcs an English writer. A'crude form 'of' a stick, gamo was played by the ancient Persians, who, passed it on to the equally ancient Greeks.'' • The discovery in 1922. of a bas relief on a wall built by Themistocles (514-449 8.C.) gives reasons for the belief that the gamo originated in the East. In the "New World" the game was also played. The Aztec Indians favoured a contest with a ball and sticks, and there are grounds for believing that the Indians have played hockey for thousands of years. . . First mention of the game in England is by Fitzstephert, who talks of London Balle Playe in 1L75. The modem game was organised in, 3875 and became-popularised after the formation of the famous Wimbledon Club in 18S3. a
