CRICKET NOTES
BAIN MAES SEASON UNSATISFACTORY POSITION SOME STIMULUS NEEDED In view of the unsatisfactory position that has developed owing to tho large number of wet Saturdays, with the resultant loss of interest among players and supporters, the Auckland Cricket Association should seriously consider utilising the remaining five days for play during tho season for one-day'matches'. The games next Saturday automatically become one-day fixtures owing to rain preventing play last Saturday, but on tho remaining days of the season, two before Easter and two after, tho controlling body 'would bo well advised to brighten the closo of tho senior championship by adopting the one-day system.
It is not likely that clubs or players would object seriously to such a scheme, as tho necessity for staid match practico has passed with the completion of representative fixtures, and interruptions through rain havo affected tho form and keenness of players to such an extent that somo fillip .is needed. Against such a proposition will probably bo brought forward tho argument that tho general standard of batting is likely to suffer as a result of too much cricket of the fast-scoring type. Evon if such wcro so, which has yet to be proved in Auckland cricket, the futuro of the gamo is so uncertain under the existing wartime conditions that tho viewpoint need not be given serious consideration. Apart from the brightening effect on the play, experience has , shown that one-day matches swell tho attendances, a matter of considerable importance at tho moment to the association and some suburhan clubs, whoso finances havo been affected through loss of revenue from wicket foes, gate-takings or collections on the grounds. In addition, if one-day games! wcro decided upon, tho second round of tho senior championship could be brought to a satisfactory conclusion.
