MAYOR OFFENDED
APPEAL FOR RECRUITS
ORGANISING A RALLY TELEGRAM FROM CHAIRMAN [BY TELEGRAPH —own correspondent] PALMERSTON NORTH. Tuesday The Mayor of FalmerSton North, Mr. A. E. Mansford, had arrangements almost completed for a recruiting rally when he received a telegram from the Hon. I). Wilson, chairman of the National Recruiting Council, suggesting that he invite Mr. J. Hodgens, M.P., to speak and extend an invitation to be present to the Hon. M. Briggs and the Hon. Pangi Mawhete.
"I consider that to receive a telegram of that nature suggests lack of confidence in my ability to organise a recruiting rally worthy of the occasion,'' stated Mr. Mansford. "I have now sent a telegram to Mr. Wilson as follows: '1 know my position as Mayor. Your suggestions show evident lack of confidence. 1 now suggest you get someone else to organise a recruiting rally, i have finished.' ''
