INDEPENDENCE QUESTION (Received February 26, 5.5 p.m.) MANILA, Fob. 25 Reversing the attitude of Lis predecessor Mr. Paul McNutt, the High Commissioner for the Philippine Islands, Mr. F. B. Sayre, announces that y he favours granting the Philippines independence in 1946, mainly because he believes the United States taxpayers are not willing to support the increasing costs of defending the islands. Commenting on the advancing technique of Avar, Mr. Sayre added: "I wonder whether it is going to be practicable for any nation to undertake to maintain and defend the kind of farflung military empires which have developed in the last two centux-ies."
