CHEAPER VEGETABLES

LITTLE DEMAND IN CITY MARKETS HEAVILY SUPPLIED With heavy quantities of most vegetables coming forward at the City Markets, housewives will welcome the consequent decrease in prices 'after the extra high rates that have ruled for many lines io. the past two or three months. Rates rose a good deal above those reached in recent years, but values for many vegetables are now about on a par with those at this time in other years. Peas and beans arrived in heavy quantities at the City Markets yesterday, and, with little demand, prices were much lower than last week. The wholesale rate for green peas ranged from 2s 6d to 6s 9d a bag. Broad beans brought Is 6d to 2s a bag, and French beans Is to 3s a case, or 3s to 9s a bag. Cabbages were available in good supplies, and sold at 2s to 5s a sack or Is to 2s a dozen on benches. Cauliflower supplies, however, were short, with prices firm. The supply of lettuce was very plentiful, resulting in very low prices. From 2s to 5s Gd a dozen was paid for cucumbers, which were on the market in large quantities. Marrows and pumpkins are now available in larger supplies, with prices correspondingly lower. Supplies all round are very heavy at present with the exception of carrots, values for which aro much firmer. The demand for all vegetables is very poor for this time of tho year.
