LAWN DERBY FAILS ATTEMPT ON GRASS RECORD The attempt by Lawn Derby at Epsom yesterday to lower tho mile grass track record of 2.0 2-5 of Van Derby was disappointing. After being pulled up twice as a result.or breaking, lie finally succeeded in covering a mile in 2.1 4-5. , . . , ~. Lawn Derby (W. J. O'Shea), assisted bj Munga Tangi as a galloping pacemaker, took 1.3 to run the first half-nnle and 1.1 4-5 for the second T W. J. O'Shea slated afterward that Lawn Derby's lapses wero caused' by the uneven crossings on the course. The horso ran in a sulky specially constructed for record making, and the l umping when goiniy over the crossings put Lawn Derby off his balance. It was noticeable when the champion was on the journey the last time that O ■Shea eased him at each crossing, so the time was very good under the circumstances. Although he failed in his mission, Lawn Derby was given an ovation. TIME IMPROVEMENTS MOLLY DIRECT GOES FAST Time improvements in every . race were again a feature of the trotting at.
