HOLIDAY BOWLS

ANNUAL CENTRE EVENT POST-SECTION PLAY STARTS WALKER DEFEATS FRANKS Inter-section play in the Auckland Bowling Centre's annual Christmas tournament was commenced on the Carlton Club's greens yesterday and at (he end of three rounds seven teams remained, two of which retain two lives. Weather conditions were ideal, but for a south-westerly wind, which taxed the judgment of some of the competitors. The green was in splendid order. Much interest centred in the cranio between Franks and Walker in tho third round. Both met as two-lifers and this fact, as well ns the outstanding qualities of tho two skips, gave promise of a keenly-contested match. After an even strugglo the Auckland team ran out victors by a margin of five points. An Even Struggle The scoring was small throughout, the greatest difference between the teams at any singe being four points. This occurred on Hie 12th head, when the board read JS in favour of Walker. However, Franks evened tlie scores on tho 11th head after securing a three and a single. The teams were again level on the tilth head, when the score was l.Vall. Burton, the Auckland lead, set a good example on the second to last head, and, in spite of the combined attack of tho Balmoral number three, Benson, and his skip, the Auckland side collected three points and opened up a lead. Balmoral was unable to cope with the position on the last head. Burton, who is a former representative cricketer, gave a sound exhibition of leading throughout. Walker revealed brilliant form at times and against Franks used his generalship to offset his opponent's attack. The game between the other two-lifers, Griffiths and Humphreys, saw the former win by a comfortable margin. Both Griffiths and his number three, Cronin, played splendid bowls. The last round of tho day saw the elimination of the visiting Hamilton team in chargo of Wilson. The linal defeat came at the hands of another visiting team, Stewart's Matamata combination. The former Xew Zealand champion, G. Dcare, who is the last surviving representative of the Carlton Club, inflicted a severe defeat- on F. W. Taylor's Carlton team. Whittle's Grey Lynn team, which fared badly at the hands of Walker in the second round, hart a stood win at the expense of Roberts' Carlton rink in the third round.
