HAULED UP
CLEANING AOTEAROA FIRST TIME IN DOMINION WORK AT HOBSONVILLE Flown to Hobsonville by Captain J. W. Burgess yesterday morning, tho Tnsman Empire Airways' flying-boat Aotearoa was hauled out of the water for a routine cleaning and inspection. This is tho first time the Aotearoa has been placed on a slip in New Zealand, and she is tho largest aircraft that has ever touched New Zealand soil. Mr. L. E. Turnill, chief engineer of the company, supervised the hauling up of tho flying-boat. This was accomplished in two hours. A'massive undercarriage was first placed under tho Aotearoa, and then the flying-boat was hauled high and dry by means of a powerful tractor, and placed in the new hangar at the top of the Hobsonvillo slipway. The hull of tho Aotearoa was covered with slimo and here and there small barnacles were growing in clusters. These have been cleaned otf, and the whole of tho metal skin of the. livingboat will he covered with a special preservative. No repairs are required and the Aotearoa will he flown back to tho base at Mechanics' Bay to-morrow or on Thursday.
