REDUCTION SOUGHT « ONLY THREE DAYS A WEEK COMPANY'S LACK OF PILOTS Notice that Union Airways of New Zealand. Limited, had applied to the Commissioner of Transport, Mr. G. L. Laurenson, for permission to substitute a thrice-weekly service in both directions for the present daily service was received at a meeting of the Council of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce yesterday. The letter stated that the majority of the company's pilots had been needed for service in the Air Force. The commissioner advised that ho would be pleased to have the council's opinion on the matter for submission to the Minister of Transport with the application. Mr. B. H. Kingston said the council could only recommend that the service should be continued on a daily basis if possible, but if the lack of pilots prevented that it had no option but to agree. He moved that the council communicate its views to the commissioner. The president, Mr. A. Ely, said he would like to point out the tremendous value of the present service to the commercial community. He considered the company should be asked if the daily schedule could not be tinued.The new schedule applied for provided for both daily south-bound services being run only on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, as from December 12, the north-bound services leaving on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. ?
