RIVALRY BETWEEN CENTRES Rivalry between Auckland and Wellington as to which centre should have priority in celebrating New Zealand s jubilee existed 50 .years ago. Ibe following comment on tape in the Wellington Times appeared in the New Zealand Herald of November ~0, 1889: , . "The day which has tbe greatest . claim to the honour is that day the first immigrants arrived in Wellington under tbe auspices of the rsew Zealand Company.
