DISPLAY OF ROSES

WELLINGTON FUNCTION SUMMER SHOW HELD OPENED BY LADY GALWAY [by TELEGRAPH —OWN* correspondent] WELLINGTON, Thursday Some brief remarks on roses were given to a large audience by Her Excellency Viscountess Galway when she opened the Wellington Horticultural Society's Rose Show at the Town Hall yesterday afternoon. This is always considered the show of the year, and once again it fully lived up to its reputation. Marvellous as were the roses, they were very nearly eclipsed by the Russell lupins, which for size and colour excelled anything displayed on any previous occasion. The main display of these lupins was most effective, the blooms being massed with rainbow-like effect against a background of black. Lady Galway, who was attended by Captain Lord Dormer, A.D.C., was met b}' the president of the society, Mrs. Knox Gilmer, who escorted her to the stage, where she was presented with a beautiful bouquet of roses shading from deep red to pink by a tiny, golden-haired girl, Audrey Anne Todd, daughter of ill*, and Mrs. Andrew Todd. Her Excellency was wearing a frock patterned in blue, black and white, under a black edge-to-edge coat. Her hat was of navy straw and she also wore a white fox fur. In the official party were Lady Myers, Mrs. Walter Nash, Mrs. W. Lee Martin, Mrs. T. C. A. Hislop, Sir Harry Batterbee, Miss Isobel Biggar, Mrs. J. S. Barton, Mr. and Mrs. J. G. McKenzie, Mr. and Mrs. Dallas, Sir Charles Luke, Captain and Mrs. Holm, Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Mcintosh (Bombay), Mrs. Charles Todd and Mrs. R. A. Wright. The women members of the party were all presented with posies of flowers. Her Excellency was entertained at afternoon tea by the president and later spent a considerable time inspecting all the exhibits.
