HEAVY WHEAT SOWING

INCREASE OF 66,300 ACRES, [by telegraph—own correspondent] GHBISTCHURCH. Thursday The Minister of Industries, and Commerce, the Hon. •• D. G. Sullivan, is pleased with the response made- by wheatgrowers for increased acreages this season'. In a statement to the Press yesterday he said that a survey of wheat-planting'.showed that, 011 preliminary figures, the acreage had .increased by approximate!}' 66,000 on that, for last season. "Some indication of the response-' given by the wheatgrowers to the appeal from the Government asking for increased production is found in the replies received to the cards sent out asking farmers to indicate the area it was intended to sow in wheat for the 1939-40 season," Mr. Sullivan said. "In 1939 the actual area sown was 193.332 acres, and the preliminary figures for 1939-40 indicate that 259,000 acres have been sown in wheat.
