'SHEFFIELD SHIELD MATCHES FAILURE OF NEW SOUTH WALES . ' (Received November 17, 9.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, Nov. 17 The Sheffield Shield cricket competition was opened to-day. At Brisbane, Queensland in its first innings made 290 (Brown 87, Allen 77, Rogers 45, Baker 32). Cheetliam took four wickets for 75 runs, O'Reilly three for 27, Pepper two for 86. New South Wales in its first innings lost five wickets for 66 (Solomon 39). McCabe and' Fingleton failed to score. In the match at Adelaide, Victoria in its first innings made 207 (G. Tamblyn 67, I. Johnson 50, Barnett 51). Cotton took three wickets for 78 runs, Grimmett three for 69, TVard two for 10, Waite two for 48. . , South Australia in its first innings ■compiled 142 for six wickets (Bradman • 76, Klose 47).
