PASSENGER KILLED

GAR STRIKES TREES ACCIDENT AT PONSONBY

OTHER OCCUPANTS NOT HURT ;

A motor-car travelling along Jervois Road toward Fonsonby Road shortly & after 11 o'clock last night, crashed into a tree, slewed round in the road and ~ t struck another, tree. A passenger in : ; 'i§ the hack seat, a young man, received injuries to the head, throat and body from which he died almost immediately. The victim was:— Mr. John Woods, of 10 Karaka Street Newton. ' The driver of the iCar, which was an open, five-seater . model,, was Mr. Reginald Gulliver, and another passenger in the front seat was Mr. James Henry Gobbitt-Dawson. Both, these men, who belong to the Air Force, and are stationed at Hobsonville, escaped injury.

The crash of the impact was heard by Dr. V. F. Usher, whose residence is across the road from where the accident happened. When he arrived at the scene the car was facing in the opposite direction to which it had been driven. Dr. Usher found Mr. Woods lying across the back seat, -bleeding from wounds to the throat and head. He died shortly afterwards. The hood was wrecked, and the left side of the car, the rear mudguard and the back door were torn loose. There was also a deep dent in the front right-hand side of the car, where it had struck the tree after turning round in the road.

The corner where the accident occurred, near the junction of Curran Street with Jervois lload, is fringed with plane trees.
