COSTLY OVERSIGHT THREE TENS MISSES DERBY EARLY FORM BRILLIANT MOST CONSISTENT RECORD Mr. E. F. C. Hinds, owner of the former champion Harold Logan, now retired, was a visitor to the Addington meeting and must havo felt regret that his three-year-old Thrco Tens was not engaged in the Derby. There is a general impression that the gelding was not nominated, but this is incorrect, and it was because of a misunderstanding that ho did not make the second payment. Threo Tens was in- the' first nomination and his form up to date makes it appear that an oversight was an expensive matter to his owner. On the other hand, Sir Julien, the winner of tho Sapling Stakes,: was not nominated for the Derby, and here again was an expensive omission. While Imperial Jade won tho classic,' it must be admitted that she has not yet beaten what are gonerally regarded as the two best three-year-olds in commission. Sir Julien last season narrowly defeated Three Tens in the Juvenile Stakes and Sapling Stakes, with Gallant Chief third on each occasion. Sir Julien did not contest the Wellington Three-year-old Stakes in September, when Gallant Chief won from Thrco Tens. The latter accounted for Sir Julien in tho New Brighton Challenge Stakes last month, and, tackling handicap races at tho Wellington October meeting, Three Tens ran two seconds. His last seven starts have produced a win and six seconds. Three Tens is a half-brother, by Jack Potts, to tho speedy Effie Parrish.

METEORIC RISE W. J. MUDFORD'S CAREER RIDER OF YOURS TRULY V W. J. Mudford, the successful apprentice rider who steered Yours Truly to victory in the New Zealand Cup, has gradually been forcing his way to the attention of the racing public by his ability, but it is unusual for a lad to win a race like-the New Zealand Cup so early in his career. Mudford was born in Auckland and is about 18 years of age. He was apprenticed to the trainer Alf. Quinlivan, who was then located in Auckland, and, according to H. N. Wiggins, New Zealand's leading lightweight, Mudford showed promise from the start. Wiggins gave him the benefit of his experience while working on the tracks, and. he says the lad was always willing to listen and take heed of what was told him. To this, no doubt, he owes a lot of his present success. His employer also says that he has always been a good lad in other respects and is not likely to bo spoiled by success. About four years ago Mudford suffored a bad fall while riding work and broko a leg.

AUSTRALIAN JOCKEY LEADING RIDER IN JAVA W. Eastburn, an Australian jockey, who returned to Sydney last week from Java, stated that during the season ho headed the list with 30 winning rides. " I secured S'J rides during tho season, which runs from March to November," he said. " There is no racing during tho monsoon season, as the weather is too unreliable. Mr. E. Edoudraad, who invited me to Java, has 15 horses. " Tho tracks in Java are beautifully kept," ho added. " Nativo labour is cheap arul tho grass is kept down by men who swing largo knives. The courses are as attractivo as thoso in Australia, but they are much smaller. There aro good tracks at Batavia, Sourabaya, Bandoeng, Djocja, Samarang, Malang and elsewhere. Tho best arc a mile in circumference." Eastburn way in Java in 1030 and visited Africa in 1037.

TURF JOTTINGS TRACK AND STABLE NEWS Valarth has had a long spell sinco ho injured a shoulder in a hurdle rueo at, I'ronthain. It is reported that he lias made a good recovery and he is to bo tried again. At the time of his accident ho shaped like being a good hurdler. Nightbeam, who lias won both races ho has so far contested, is a bay colt by Night Raid out of tlio Paladin—Tormentor marc Lady Burleigh, who raced only four times as a juvenilo, and was placed on each occasion. Tormentor was out of imported Torquato, who also left the useful Gauntlet and Martial Dawn, dam of Callamnrt, and who several removes back links with the lino that has produced Royal Chief.

C. T. "Wilson has gone back to his old home in Southland for a short holiday, during which he will ride at the Invcrenrgill meeting, his mounts being Flagman, Eiro's Ruin and Spendthrift-. Two southern apprentices who have been at Riccarton recently will also be riding at Invercargill, R E. Humphries having engagements for Sailing Lady, Erin's Star and Doubleack, while W. F. Ellis will be on Mona's Song, Gold Robo and Mondello.

The recent form of Centrepoiso makes tho story of his acquisition by the Messrs. Avison Brothers very interesting. His dam, Monetto, was a failure, and R. Gregory sold her to tho brothers for £'2o. They had intended to buy a car. but put the money into tho mare, who subsequently dropped a colt to Hunting Song. Tho colt was called Centrepoiso after a featuro of tho car they had intondod to buy. The form of Centrepoise is a high tribute to the ability of the young Hastings trainer HvOld Griffith.
