The breathless dawn has given Way to dan And dew lies gently on the waking earth; The rain of yesterday has kissed the flow'ts And now a shining tui wakes to. mirth. Across an opal sky of dawning blue Kotare wings a flashing, noisy Way; Aboue the scrub the green-eyed matuk lurks, Alert with scanning eyes 'for early prey. Now shyly peeps a golden ring of light Above the misled peaks and verdant hills, The first brave sunbeams come a-dancing down And Wake to life the quiet little rillt. —Original by Maureen Grace (13).
