Pruning, Clematis Montana
"IVfOST of the clematis species are -L'-L pruned during the winter, but the early blooming Clematis montana and its variety, rubens, should be dealt with immediately after flowering, that is. about December. There is not usually mucn work to be done, but if the plants are taking up moro room than can conveniently be spared, some of the oldest vines can bo cut out, or shortened as far as the vounger and more vigorous growths. This is an instruction quoted frequently. It is a most important one, for the reason that, if a cut is not made just above a sturdy shoot or bud, much of the energy of the plant will be wasted, and it is even possiblo tho end of the stem may dio back.
