MAORI BATTALION

I Sir, —I noticed a reference to the poor response in tho North for the Maori Battalion. As far as ♦my own tribe of Ngatikahu is concerned, I wish to state that in our opinion an official tribal recruiting agent should have been appointed. It was also pointed out in representations 011 the point that Ngatikahu had a wonderful record in the last war. My people felt the position very keenly and felt slighted over the omission. As far as we are aware at present tho position remains the same. Even the tribal central post office at Maiigonui has no facilities for enrolling men. Last Saturday, as a last resort, I requested Mr. Jess Rapihana, Rarawa's capable recruiting agent, to visit us, and as a result 23 enrolled from the small niaraes of Pnrapara and Jvo Te Aliua —almost the "whole male population. I understand that in some other Northern mr.'aes the men are waiting to be enrolled. As the time for the first enrolments is drawing to a close. 1 suggest that the authorities should make facilities available at Mangonui post o (f ice . _ Percy Greaves.
