PAY ON SERVICE CITY COUNCIL EMPLOYEES AUGMENTING MILITARY RATE REDUCTION MOVE DEFEATED An effort to alter the decision of the Auckland City Council in the matter of supplementing the military pay of any of its employees who enlist in the special military force was made last niglit by Mr. A. St. Clair Brown, when he sought to have the resolution of the council amended. The resolution passed by the council on September 0 was that the council make itself responsible for any difference of pay between the military rates and those of the officer's remuneration in order to bring it up to his usual rate of pay. Mr. Brown moved that this be amended by adding the words: "Provided that the council shall not supplement any of its officers' military pay beyond ,such amount as will make military pay plus council's contribution exceed £4OO in any year in any one case dating from the commencement of military pay." Mr. Broun said that the original motion reflected more credit on their hearts than on their heads, and he felt that the members of the council were rather caught on the hop. He thought the resolution was wrong and should be rescinded, but lie was prepared to suggest a' compromise. As members of a local body they had been able to do what a vast number of people were not able to do, and he was afraid that their resolution would create a good deal of bad feeling. The amendment was seconded by Mr. J. L. Coal? ley. Mr. J. J. Sullivan said that men had acquired rights under the council's motion and those who had gone looked to the council to honour its promise. The deputy-mayor, Mr. .1. A. C. Allum, who presided, said that in this matter it. was not possible to be logical and they could only do what seemed to be right. Several/, members agreed that they could not go back on what they had done, Mrs. 31. M. Dreaver said she would like to have seen the question discussed by the local bodies so that agreement could be reached, but she would stand by the original resolution.

Replying to the several speakers. Mr. Brown said that on finding out thev had made a mistake the council should admit it and correct the position.

The amendment was declared lost on the voices.
