HIGHER LANDED COSTS Because of difficulties in arranging, drafts, the deliveries of many recent consignments of goods arriving in vessels at Auckland from overseas have been retarded. In sonic instances difficulties linvo not; yet been solved, and the goods concerned are held at the wharves pending settlement. The chief trouble centres upon goods from the United States and Canada, the landed cost of which has been increased beyond original estimates because of the depreciation of sterling against the dollar. Exchange fluctuations and other factors affecting the costs of goods have, in the instances mentioned meant that the Reserve Bank's remittance allocations are exceeded. Unless other arrangements can be made, the procedure often is' that the goods must remain in store, incurring extra charges in the meantime, until further allocations accrue sufficient in amount to obtain their, release.
