TRADE IN AUCKLAND

ORDERS STILL HEAVY STOCKS BEING DEPLETED FURTHER IMPORT SETBACKS r With a short week as a result of the Labour Day holiday, wholesale grocery merchants in Auckland have been exceptionally busy. Deliveries of general goods on November account, which were made earlier in the week, added to the rush, but it is expected that the .congestion will be cleared by the end of the week. Orders on the new month's account continued to reflect the increased buying and a wide range of goods is.in demand, particularly summer lines, such as. canned fruit, fish and jelly, crystals. Stocks in warehouses are being gradually depleted, and there is no doubt that numerous lings will be short before Christmas. Deliveries of tobacco and cigarettes for the period from November 1 to 15 will be despatched from-warehouse:?, to the country on Tuesday and to the town and suburbs on Wednesday. Few importers expected much relief from the restrictions for the first half of next year, but the publication of the complete list of goods was even more severe than had been anticipated. The cuts imposed have been drastic, and it is clear that there must be a famine of imported lines before very long. Staff reductions also appear to be inevitable, as the number of lines being handled is dwindling daily.

CREAM OF TARTAR Stocks of cream of tartar throughout New Zealand ore very low, and the arrival of further supplies is anxiously awaited. FRUIT SALAD Nearly all lines of tinned fruit salad are now sold out, and no further supplies will arrive until the new season's pack is ready about March. TINNED PINEAPPLES Stocks of tinned pineapples in Auckland aro now particularly short. A further shipment is expected fairly early in November, when the shortage will be relieved. WORCESTER SAUCE A further small shipment of one line of English Worcester sauco has been landed. As the market previously was bare of stocks, the shipment is meeting with a ready demand. PRESERVING JARS A keen inquiry has been noticeable recently for various types of preserving jars and storekeepers are now buying sufficient quantities to cover their requirements for the season. CHERRIES AND GINGER A local manufacturer of crystallised cherries and preserved ginger has announced that, owing to the increased price of sugar and other costs, all contracts on hand can only bo executed at an additional 3 /*(l per lb. DRIED FRUITS Californian shippers of dried fruits have advised that shipments to New Zealand will not bo accepted on a deferred payment basis. With the exception of a few' merchants who are able to pay in dollars, all other orders have been cancelled. An acute shortage of raisins and prunes is therefore inevitable.

Oct. 25 ' According to tlie Bloemfontein correspondent of the Times, Dr. Viljoen, Secretary of Agriculture, states that Britain was willing to operate on the South AfVican open wool market sufficiently to maintain prices Jit least at the Australian level and possibly higher. The United Kingdom would' doubtless take the maize export surplus. It- would definitely take all surplus dairy produce and citrus fruits. SYDNEY PRODUCE VALUES (Received October 20, 8 p.m.) SYDNEY.
