NEW PETROL PRICES
EFFECT OF INCREASE NO DECREASE IN SALES The increase in the price of petrol caused little difference to the business of Auckland service stations yesterday. Some motorists grumbled, but the majority accepted the position philosophically. All-night ser.vice stations raised their prices in the early hours of yesterday morning, and others followed when they opened for business. The increase was not exactly a surprise to the retail trade, as it, was known thai the oil companies were trying to obtain it. The manager of one service station said that the Id a gallon tax had been such a shock to motorists that the additional penny seemed only a small increase in comparison. It was a serious problem, however, when the price of petrol approached -s (id a gallon, ami the increase must have the effect of checking sales. The proprietor of another service station said sales were not materially affected yesterday and motorists did not stop their buying. It was too early, however, to estimate the effect ol the increase
