CEREMONY AT WANGANUf FOUNDATION STONE LAID 1 [BY TELEGRAPH OWN CORRESPmnnOT}' "WAIST GAIvTTI, ."Wciiesday An important step in the progress of Wanganui took place this, afternoon, when the foundation stone of the new Wanganui Chief Post Office was laid by the Postmaster-General, the Hon. F. Jones, in the presence of a, large gathering. The Mayor, Mr. W. J. Rogers, welcomed the Minister The present post office was opened by the late Sir Joseph Ward in 190*2. Since then a steady growth in the volume of business handled by the department at Wanganui has been manifest and some years ago it was ' necessary to obtain other accommodation fcr the money order and savings bank branch and the telegraph' engt-" neers staff. Apart from the natural growth of business the post office has during recent years undertaken much additional work on behalf of other State departments, resulting in accom« modation being heavily taxed and ulti-. mately giving rise to the decision to provide an up-to-date post office.
