SWIMMING FEAT
YOUNG SWEDISH GIRL
ENGLISH CHANNEL CROSSED
Using the "crawl" stroke the whole way, a 21-year-old Swedish swimming instructress, Sally Bauer, recently swam the English Channel in five minutes under 15 hours. She had saved up for three years to make the attempt and by the time she returned to Sweden it had cost her £IOO. The only woman to make better time was the American Gertrude Ederle, who took 14 hours 42 minutes in 1926. Sally Bnner entered the water at Cap Gris-Nez, France, and reached Dover after a long battle with the tide. Landing in moonlight at the foot of the cliffs at Folkestone Warren, she was greeted on the beach by three peoplo who happened to bo about, but later, of course, there was an official welcome. Last year Miss Bauer swam 36 miles across the Kattegat, between Sweden and Denmark, and previously she swam the -SO miles from Sweden to the Aaland Islands. In both attempts she created a record.
