L. Paterson, S.M., the cases being brought by the Department of Internal Affairs, for whom-Mr. ,E. Roe appeared. , A feature of the prosecution was the fact that the majority of the offenders were Maoris, who seemed to believe that in regard to killing pigeons there was one law for Europeans and-another for Maoris. Ernest Henry Beckett, who was stopped on the Atiamuri Road with a pigeon and a rifle in his possession, was convicted and fined £5. Tom Emery and Dave_ Box, two Maoris, were each fined £5. They admitted shooting three pigeons and a tui. Edgar K. Dysart admitted taking three native pigeons from the Rotoiti bush and was fined £5. A fine of £2 was imposed upon Rangi Hunu, who admitted taking a pigeon at Okere. Three TJrewera Maoris, Harry Huriwalta, Rangiuru lvua and IC. Rurehe, who admitted shooting pigeons and tuis in the Urewera bush, were each fined £5.
