TAKING OF TROUT
FINE OF £ll FOR MAORI RANGER PUSHED IN STREAM [BY Tl'.nEGltAl'il —OWX COUKKSI'OXDKNT] ROTORUA, Wednesday Fines and costs totalling £ll were imposed upon a Maori, Jim Wallace, who appeared in tho Eotorua Magistrate's Court yesterday before Mr. S. L. Patcrson, S.M., charged with taking trout out of season, and with obstructing a ranger in tho execution of his duty. Wallaco pleaded guilty to both charges. Mr. E. .Roe, who appeared for tho Department, of Internal Affairs, said that 011 September 24 a ranger, Mr. Bell, had been patrolling tho Utuhina Stream, and had come upon a group of men who appeared to be driving trout into a not set across the stream. Defendant gave a false name and refused to show the ranger his bag. A tussle then developed, during which trout fell from defendant's bag. During the tussle defendant, a powerfully-built man, pushed tho ranger into the stream. Me then made oil', but at a later date was recognised by tho ra ngcr.
